Welcome to BATALA YORK! We are a newly forming samba-reggae drumming group here in York.  Currently recruiting members - no experience necessary!

ABOUT BATALA...

Samba-reggae is a style of samba drumming originating in north eastern Brazil. It has a rich heritage, being born from the Afro-Brazilian culture of Bahia, and is popular at carnival time. Samba-reggae has a community spirit and an infectious rhythm!

BATALA is an international samba-reggae group, founded in 1997 by Giba Goncalves, a Bahian percussionist living in Paris. There are now over 20 bands worldwide, playing the same music with the same spirit. As a member of BATALA, you can play with any of these bands, creating many opportunities to travel and join other bands for their main events throughout the year. These range from the Notting Hill Carnival here in the UK, to the world famous carnivals of Brazil itself!

BATAL YORK...

BATALA YORK is currently being set up by myself, Elly Dunn, a former member of Batala Liverpool. Having moved to York for work, I decided to bring my favourite hobby with me, and start a new band with the help of friends from Batala Liverpool and worldwide. BATALA YORK will be a not-for-profit-community group, which aims to bring the people and communities of this lovely city together through music.
